Two VCR’s, Back to the Future II video cassette, Two Umbrellas, Mattress, Bedsheet, TV, chair

In this time based sculpture the VCR’s have been transformed so that whilst they are playing a video the tape can be drawn out of one VCR and played in/out of a second. In this sculpture one VCR plays a copy of Back to the Future II out of the machine and into another VCR, in a symbiotic fashion. As the tape is shared between the two machines it loops around the stems of two umbrellas, rubbing as it moves.

The umbrellas partially protect the tape from natural light, which ordinarily deteriorates and erases film. Conversely the tape rubs against the wooden umbrella stems, scratching and deteriorating the film. During the exhibition the deterioration of the Back to the Future II film is relayed on a TV connected to the VCR.
